AUTUMN LEAVES
18 October 2023
AUTUMN LEAVES We know Summer is well and truly behind us once the weather cools and the leaves begin to change. For us at Ginger Lily Florists, we Love this time of year. Having now finished our last wedding from our Summer Wedding Season, we are dusting off our heavier shirts, rolling up the sleeves, and launching head long into our very popular Workshops. Our Autumn Wreath Workshop was a sell-out, we now have three more to delight. There are limited spots to ensure everyone gets the right amount of teaching for their creations – so book early to avoi ...

Love Is In The Air (despite COVID)...
27 August 2020
For most of us, our summer plans have been somewhat up in the air, and with autumn fast approaching – the days are getting shorter now, and a noticeable cooling is in the air. What would have been a wonderful wedding season, with Love In The Air, we were all left holding our breath. As a florist who loves her wedding work, and wedding customers… I confess, I have missed somewhat the Love Bubble fix I get when working on a wedding. Thankfully, a few brave souls have embarked on the journey of sharing their lives together, navigating the new rules we now operate under, and hanging ...

Coming Out Of Lockdown... Dear Flower Lover, I am writing to update you on our plans to keep you and our teams safe as we start to reopen our Shoreham and Brighton stores. I am pleased to confirm that Walter Smith Flowers Shoreham (a Ginger Lily Florist) will be reopening tomorrow in line with the latest government guidelines and social distancing measures. Ginger Lily Florists Brighton will continue trading as an online and phone order retailer, and by appointment only floral consultation in the shop. Thank you for being so flexible and for sticking with us and shopping in different ways. ...

Silver Lining...
14 April 2020
Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining. Closing was not an easy thing to do. At the time, I had the heart-breaking task of calling our beloved customers to let them know that we were unable to fulfil their orders, as we have closed as a result of the Government directed COVID-19 Lockdown. We tidied, prepared, turned the lights off, and then walked out of our darling little shop, closing the door behind us. I sat in my car some time afterwards trying to breathe. I had a massive lump in my chest that the air just could not get around… and then it came. The tears, the terror, the realisation th ...

As Seasons Change, So Will We...
30 March 2020
As Seasons Change, So Will We… Like everyone else, I now find that my very busy diary is completely empty. Weirdly, I’m taking much comfort from the fact that this is utterly out of my hands… and putting aside all the obvious worries about the financial impact, the state of the industry afterwards and rebuilding my business, all of which I have no answers to or control over, I feel liberated despite the opposite actually being true! Time is always such a precious commodity. There’s never enough time for the garden, family, friends, planning, thinking, relaxing an ...

FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS...Wedding Bliss
03 December 2018
I have to say... what a Wedding Season! Over the course of this year, and in the thick of "Wedding Season" we met with quite a number of brides, grooms, mothers of the bride, mothers of the groom, bridesmaids, and even a pup or two! It was busy, it was crazy, and it was all totally magical. When I speak about this blooming side of the business, I am often asked, do I have a favourite wedding? I scoff... we're not supposed to have favourites. As its been a while between blogs, this got me thinking... With two more weddings to go before we see out the year - with one in a Castle, ...

FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS… It's Christmas... Isn't It?
03 December 2017
There is something truly magical about the run up to Christmas. None more so when one of your favourite customers asks you to do their Christmas Flowers... again...! [Cue: Happy Dance, in circles] By the time we got to The Grand Hotel, Brighton, set up was in full swing, and we were so swept up in the excitement, I nearly forgot to take pictures. Here are just a couple of cheeky pics I managed to snap on the run... (hope you like them!) The beautiful Carousel Horse Wreaths. The Floral Ferris Wheels. Unless you've ever done it... I do not think you will truly understand just how labou ...

FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS… Something Blue, Something New, and Something Just A Little Bit Different.
26 November 2017
Sleepless nights… extensive research… and listening to your heart, were the three key elements behind our exciting new luxury range – GL Luxury. Once we had whittled down the list of hopefuls, to only the very special, we were able to get on with the business of flowers, and really have some fun! It was a long day, and my team and I were completely pooped at the end of it, but thrilled and exhilarated too. We had done it! Our ideas had been brought to life. Within the GL Luxury line there is something for everyone. An exciting take on a traditional rose bouquet. Pure whit ...

Oh For The Love Of Flowers… What’s With The Weather…??
17 August 2017
Is Autumn here already…? I’m not ready. As Autumn fights its way into Summer, I am reminded too of changes, and what Change means to me. Autumn is a season for balancing light and dark, letting go, and accepting the impermanence of things. It is a period of change leading to the dark of winter. Far too often, we fear the dark and adore only the light. With the onset of Autumn, I am reminded that nature's cycles are mirrored in our lives. A time for letting go and releasing things that have been a burden. Having experienced the budding of life in spring and the flowerings an ...

My Hit Of Happy
02 August 2017
What do flowers do for you? For me, flowers are my “Hit Of Happy”. Those that know me, and even those that don’t may have guessed, I lead a rather busy existence. And at any one time, I have a rather large number of balls up in the air. Mostly, I manage to keep them there. Sometimes, not so much… and sometimes, I may even loose a few and not even realise! What gives me my Hit Of Happy isn’t getting a gift of my favourite flowers, it isn’t even seeing a beautifully, artfully created bouquet going out to one of our lovely, special customers… althoug ...

For The Love Of Flowers
17 July 2017
So often we are asked where our lovely flowers come from and how we choose them. Surely, with so much choice, you must have a secret recipe or something…? I was discussing this with one of my lovely Floral Artisans, and she said that I should put this in my blog. For me, like many of my “big” decisions in business, I am a little bit head, and a lot of heart. My choice of flowers for our little shop is largely an emotional decision – which may also explain the variety over the course of a week. Sorry lovelies – no secret formula… I buy what I love. I also ...

For The Love Of Summer
09 May 2017
Summer is the stuff of dreams. A time of infinite fun. The days seems to last forever, and the nights are cool and delicious. It is a time of romance, excitement and enhanced enjoyment of life. For me, growing up in Australia, Summer meant cicada song and the sound of lawn mowers braying on a Sunday morning. It is funny how still now, in the UK, the dronic sound of the lawn mower and the heavenly scent of a freshly cut lawn, transports me back to my chilhood. Carefree and in love with the kiss of the sun on my face. Now, also, it's the explosion of colour in my garden and the wild flow ...

What an absolute cracker of a day for Day 1 of the Foodies Festival, Brighton!!! A massive Congratulations and shout out to Ava, Zoe, Lauren and the gang for pulling together a most professional, fabulous, and highly enjoyable event! I hope you guys got to have some nap time afterwards... you earned it! Well done x For those that didn't make it along - definitely one for next year. Here are just a few happy snaps that I managed to take (admittedly, after all the hard work had been done by my amazing team of florists, in the wee hours of the morning). I do have the best team! &n ...

When flowers break the internet!
27 March 2017
Who would have thought it that nature would have triumphed over technology! Say It With Flowers! I love flowers. I always have. I always will. They will be my first and foremost love. Except for my wonderful supportive husband and darling little puppy Booboo… I digress... Our precious Booboo (cheeky pic x). And except when it comes to my amazing team of Floral Artisans. Then, these girls are the ones I need to step in to protect – and yesterday, it was from their outstanding and overriding commitment to our fabulous customers and their need for flowers on Mother’s Day. ...

Waiting for the other shoe to drop.
24 March 2017
I am completely overwhelmed and humbled by the support we get from our fabulous, amazing, wonderful customers. Our little team at Ginger Lily have worked tirelessly to bring the most order, control and magic we can to your day of Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day (as I grew up knowing it). We have counted, reflected, researched what would be the best possible flowers, plants and giftware that we could provide, to make sure that when you visit us (online here, or in person), you too would feel the magic. Now my terror creeps in... Will you love it, as we do! When one of our drivers turn ...

Getting Ready For Mother's Day... How many photo's does it take to make it to our website? How many photo's does it take to make it to our blog? The answer to the first is many... the answer to the latter, just one or two (cheeky) shots! I have shared previously how talented my team @ GL are... I fear I'm about to do that again. As deliciously dedicated Floral Artisans, I truly believe they can do anything! "We can take a few shots of the newly created floral bouquets for Mother's Day for the website - right?" (I muse)... Sure! One day, a dodgy camera, 2 skil ...

Valentines Day
29 January 2017
The true history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. Whilst February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and St. Valentine’s Day, who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. My favourite legend, which plays to my strong romantic streak, contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wiv ...

A new year, a new window full of possibilities!

I know I am biased, but I am blessed with the best team! Having gone from one person with a dream, to a team of 11 people, I've learned from the advice of people I admire and follow (Richard Branson is definitely the top of my inspirational leader list): Choose the best BE SELECTIVE when hiring. My team are an extension of me and the front of my brand and company. As a very wise person once said (thank you again RB) - hire people smarter than yourself. People who will work hard in helping me make the business a success. People who are as passionate about flowers and doing the very best ...

Get Ready to Ring in an Amazing 2017!
30 December 2016
2016 was a tough year for a lot of us, leaving us wanting desperately for the new year and a fresh start. But with all the challenges, there were good times too. Now is the time to reflect on the good stuff. Here is what I try to do: Write down everything you have achieved and be GRATEFUL. I believe that every challenge presented to us is an opportunity to learn and grow. If you had to move, you might have learned to let go of attachments. If you ended a relationship, you might have learned that you deserve a better more fulfilling relationship. If you struggled financially, you might have l ...
